Singapore Law

In the past Singapore was a British colony and the legal system is based on the common law as created in the UK.

The supreme law of the country is the Constitution that established fundamental freedoms of the individual and brings for the country system. Legislation contrary to the Constitution shall, to the extent of the inconsistency, be useless.






The legislature includes the Parliament and the President of Singapore. Parliament is modeled after the Westminster system of parliamentary democracy in which Parliament's members are elected on the regular general selection.

The Executive includes the President, the Cabinet and the Attorney-General.
The President is the leader of the Executive. He or she is decided by the citizens and he have the right to veto the state budget and make appointments to public office.

The legal profession in Singapore is merged - in Singapore, lawyer may act as an Advocate and a Solicitor too.

Police Force is in charge of holding and sustaining peace and order. Along with the Singapore Police Force, other government agencies investigate offences and impose laws in certain places too.
